6.5 km along the Red Cliffs and Xylofagou coast
Between the coast of Ormideia village and Liopetri village (where the fjord-like ‘Potamos tou Liopetriou' lies) there is a limestone coast that goes on for nearly ten kilometers. The western part (about 6.5 km long) consists of cliffs and caves. The east part is flat and and less dramatic. The highlight of the route is the stretch west of Cape Pyla known as the Red Cliffs, where the rock rises vertically to a height of 50 meters. Further 600 meters inland on the barren rock at an elevation of 100 meters one finds the Xylofagou conical medieval watchtower.
Along the rocky coast there are a good number of caves above sea level, some of which host pigmy hippopotamus bones, others stalagmites and stalactites. There is at least one sea cave with an underwater entrance. There is one sea cave with two entrances which is possible to enter in a kayak (requires case as the ceiling is low).
Very lucky explorers may be blessed to see the elusive monk seal, a rare species in the world (estimated world population is about 700 animals) that lives mainly in the Mediterranean Sea. In Cyprus there are about thirty seals.
Even though the coast is very near the hugely popular Ayia Napa resort, it feels completely remote. This is at least in a large part because it lies inside the British bases.
One should be very cautious about coming to this coast. The reason is that the British army holds exercises with live ammunition here (a program with the dates is made public usually every two weeks). For the reason of the relevant unpredictability of the exercises we do not accept online kayaking trips along the coast (explorers need to contact us to confirm).
Cyprus Walks Etc offers different standard guided kayaking trips on sea touring (sit inside) kayaks. Specifically for the Red Cliffs we offer a trip that combines kayaking with walking. We also offer customised kayaking trips (including trips for groups of six on sit-on-top kayaks).
You are welcomed to book with us.
